The concept for an ultra-lightweight pizza cartonboard developed by Finnish cartonboard manufacturer Mets\u00e4 Board together with packaging manufacturer Adara Pakkaus and other industry experts has now received the WorldStar Award 2024 from the World Packaging Organisation (WPO).<\/strong><\/p>\n

The award-winning lightweight pizza board solution made from Mets\u00e4Board Natural WKL Bright has several advantages: it comes with uses significantly less material than conventional solutions made from recycled fibres<\/strong>, The new material saves around 38 per cent in weight and reduces the carbon footprint by up to 50 per cent - without compromising on stability, function or print quality. Mets\u00e4 Board's sustainability team determined this data by comparing the environmental impact of the material and its production.<\/p>\n

The innovative packaging concept was in collaboration with leading experts in the packaging industry<\/strong> developed. Packaging manufacturer Adara Pakkaus produced the corrugated board and printed the pizza box, while Marvaco supplied the flexographic printing plates. The visual identity was designed by Futupack and Dr Kai Lankinen, researcher and expert in ECG (Expanded Colour Gamut) printing, provided valuable expertise in graphic design, pre-press and flexographic printing requirements.<\/p>

Mets\u00e4 Board's pizza cartonboard concept was already recognised in a competition organised by the Nordic packaging industry associations at the end of 2023. honoured with a ScanStar<\/strong> and could therefore also be submitted for the WorldStar Awards.<\/p>\n

Since 1970, the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has been organising the WorldStar Awards to the best packaging innovations from around the world<\/strong> to be honoured. For this year's competition, the international jury of experts assessed a total of 435 entries from 41 countries. They compared the entries with similar solutions from all over the world. Only the designs that performed best in their category and in their market and were better executed or more innovative in comparison received an award.<\/p>
