{"id":91062,"date":"2024-03-14T10:21:38","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T09:21:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/?p=91062"},"modified":"2024-03-13T16:22:01","modified_gmt":"2024-03-13T15:22:01","slug":"recycled-plastic-for-snack-packaging","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/recycelter-kunststoff-fuer-snackverpackung\/","title":{"rendered":"Snack packaging made from 50 per cent recycled plastic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Several partners from across the flexible food packaging supply chain have worked together to bring a new, high-quality snack packaging to the market that is made from 50 per cent recycled plastic and meets strict food contact requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The new packaging was launched at the end of 2023 for Sunbites, PepsiCo's well-known snack brand, in the UK and Ireland. The packaging was developed by the <strong>Recycling plastic waste into food-grade packaging material<\/strong> produced. As a complementary approach to mechanical recycling, an advanced recycling process is used that enables the recycled materials to be <strong>the demanding EU regulations<\/strong> for applications such as food contact packaging, contact-sensitive and medical products.<\/p>\n<p>Several partners from across the supply chain have worked together to make the introduction of this new circular packaging possible: <a href=\"https:\/\/green-dot.de\/home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GreenDot<\/a> ensured the procurement and supply of post-consumer plastic packaging waste produced with Plastic Energy's technology. <strong>in Tacoil (pyrolysis oil)<\/strong> were converted. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ineos.com\/businesses\/ineos-olefins-polymers-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ineos Olefins &amp; Polymers Europe<\/a> <strong>used this pyrolysis oil as an alternative to conventional fossil fuels<\/strong>, to first produce recycled propylene and then new, recycled polypropylene resin in virgin quality at its production facility in Lavera, France. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irplast.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Irplast<\/a> uses the new resin to turn existing plastic packaging designs into <strong>develop new packaging films<\/strong>, which consist of 50 per cent recycled post-consumer materials and fulfil the requirements for food contact. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amcor.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amcor<\/a> processes these films into printed packaging that can be <strong>the same technical performance<\/strong> for PepsiCo.<\/p><div class=\"packa-in-post-alle\" style=\"text-align: center;\" id=\"packa-1844592193\"><div id=\"packa-3969889391\"><a data-no-instant=\"1\" href=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/en\/newsletter\/\" rel=\"noopener\" class=\"a2t-link\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"PJ Self-promotion English 03\"><!--noptimize--><img src=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03.png\" alt=\"\"  srcset=\"https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03.png 840w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-300x75.png 300w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-768x192.png 768w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-18x5.png 18w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-332x83.png 332w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-664x166.png 664w, https:\/\/packaging-journal.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/01\/PJ-Eigenwerbung-English-03-688x172.png 688w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 840px) 100vw, 840px\" width=\"840\" height=\"210\"  style=\" max-width: 100%; height: auto;\" \/><!--\/noptimize--><\/a><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Using the polypropylene films, PepsiCo launched Sunbites packaging in the UK. The partnership is part of PepsiCo Positive (pep+), the company's end-to-end transformation programme, <strong>to eliminate the use of new fossil-based plastics in snack bags in Europe by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The proportion of recycled polymer is within the<strong> ISCC PLUS programme (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification) certified<\/strong>, an independent third party who certifies that the production process has been followed in accordance with the principles of mass balance and that the information is correct.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201eGreenDot has announced plans to recycle more post-consumer plastic waste in Europe to produce high-quality circular polymers for plastic food packaging.
