What is special about it is that a table-top design has been realised in Schubert-Pharma's otherwise open top-loading systems. This makes it even easier for pharmaceutical customers to guarantee the required line clearance.

Schubert-Pharma has many years of experience and expertise in packaging vials, ampoules, syringes and other products for the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. The background to the development of the new system was the desire to enable manufacturers to comply with line clearance even better. Klaus Dierolf, Group Head of Pharma Project Management, explains: „Line clearance basically means Ensuring a tidy work area to avoid mix-ups and mixing of products. In concrete terms, this means that pharmacists must carry out a line clearance after packaging a batch to ensure that all products have been cleared from the machine before a new batch is started. This prevents mixing.“

Due to the open design of Schubert-Pharma's top-loading machines, there was previously a theoretical possibility that products could get into the base of the machine during the packaging process. Schubert-Pharma wanted to close this gap and realised a table construction in the TLM machines.

„We are delighted that our machine for packaging vials is celebrating its premiere at Achema, as this will enable us to better demonstrate and explain the new table-top design to our customers. With our new vial machine, we have made the fulfilment of line clearance more pharmaceutically compliant and user-friendly. Manufacturers also benefit from time savings during batch changeovers and a higher level of safety.“

Karin Kleinbach, Head of Pharmaceuticals Division

Vial machine for various formats

The new packaging machine can be used to one, three, five or ten vials - each packed horizontally or vertically in the compartment of the carton. The packaging of five vials in cartons will be demonstrated at Achema. These are fed into the system via a turntable. At the same time, the 5ct cartons are erected in two lanes and placed on a Transmodul, Schubert's transport robot. The compartment for the 5ct carton is then erected and glued into the carton. A pick-and-place robot picks up the vials arriving on the infeed conveyor and groups them upright on the Transmodul.

During this packaging step No glass-to-glass contact due to the robot's individual picks so that everything is packed safely for the pharmacist. An F2 robot is then used to load the 5-unit formation of pre-grouped vials into cartons. A mould tilts the upright vials into a horizontal position. Finally, the booklets are fed to the magazine in 2 lanes, destacked and loaded into cartons after a code check. The glued cartons are closed and placed on the outfeed conveyor.

Packaging materials such as folding cartons, leaflets and adhesive labels should be considered as early as possible in the development of new medicines.
