The paludiculture carton from OBI and LEIPA

A cartonboard that actively contributes to climate protection? This is exactly what the conversation with OBI at FACHPACK 2025 is all about. Head of ESG Claudia Schulte-Beckhausen explains how the paludiculture cartonboard was created from reed canary grass and waste paper - and why peatland renaturation plays a decisive role in this.

At FACHPACK 2025 in Nuremberg, we had a short but exciting conversation with Claudia Schulte-Beckhausen, Head of ESG at OBI. The topic was a real innovation project: the paludiculture cartonboard, developed in cooperation with LEIPA.

🌱 The highlight: ten per cent of the cardboard is made from reed canary grass, which is grown on rewetted moors - one of the most effective measures for climate protection. In combination with recycled paper, this creates packaging that is doubly sustainable.

💬 In the video, Mrs Schulte-Beckhausen explains:
- How the project came about
- What role paludiculture plays for OBI
- Why customers can actively make climate-friendly choices
- And what this means for packaging, logistics and brand responsibility

📦 Paludiculture cartonboard is an example of how material innovation and ecological responsibility can go hand in hand - with relevance for brands, consumers and the entire packaging industry.
