Global deliveries of aluminium aerosol cans fall

The International Organisation of Aluminium Aerosol Can Manufacturers (Aerobal) reports a decline in global deliveries of 1.7% to around 3.3 billion units for the first half of 2025. The main reason for this was weaker demand in the cosmetics segment, while food applications increased.

According to Aerobal, deodorants and hairsprays in particular, traditionally the highest-volume categories, recorded significant declines. In North and South America, deliveries fell by almost four per cent to 1.26 billion units, meaning that the region remains the largest single market despite the dip. Deliveries to the EU-27 and the UK rose slightly from 1.19 to 1.21 billion units; in Asia/Oceania, Africa and the Middle East, there were declines compared to the same period last year.

Regional drivers and market dynamics

Developments in North and South America were characterised by high volatility. US tariffs on aluminium cans contributed to this, as did a noticeable drop in consumer purchasing power in Brazil, a particularly dynamic market in previous years. At the same time, demand for cans with a high recycled content and for „low-carbon aluminium“, which is produced using renewable energies, is increasing on the American continent.

Focus on regulation and sustainability

In Europe, the regulatory framework is becoming stricter. Stricter design-for-recycling requirements are expected as part of the upcoming packaging and packaging waste regulations. Across the industry, the focus is therefore increasingly on material cycles and recycling quotas.

Outlook

„Despite the current headwinds, our industry has proven its resilience time and time again,“ said Aerobal Secretary General Seifeldin Raslan Mohamed. „Even as regulatory pressure in Europe increases and global economic conditions remain challenging, aluminium aerosol cans continue to stand out for their unique combination of product protection, consumer convenience and sustainability. This makes me confident that our industry will adapt successfully and continue to grow in the medium term.“
