Preparation for the PPWR
Méo Cafés switches to „Design for Recycling” PE flowpacks from adapa
Méo, the leading brand of independent coffee roaster Méo-Fichaux, is anticipating EU legislation with adapa to offer flexible packaging that combines performance and design for recycling.
The expertise behind the coffee packaging
Coffee, one of the world's favourite drinks, requires high-performance packaging. It must protect against oxygen, moisture and light, while also having anti-static properties to ensure the integrity of the product. High-quality printing is also essential to emphasise the brands at the point of sale. These properties are traditionally achieved with films that combine PET and aluminium (PET/Alu/PE).
With the entry into force of the PPWR and its ambitious 2030 targets, these non-recyclable multi-component materials must be replaced by alternatives that are designed for recycling and compatible with existing recycling streams.
Why switch to mono materials now?
As a family business, Méo has been integrating strict CSR practices into its strategy for decades. A pioneer in organic and fair trade with Max Havelaar since the early 1990s, the brand also launched a 100 % home compostable capsule in 2021.
Today, this requirement also extends to packaging: Méo anticipated the legal changes, in particular the PPWR (2030), several years ago and now favours mono-materials for its entire portfolio.
To make this transformation, which began with pads, a success, Méo relied on the expertise of adapa, a leading European partner for flexible packaging and specialist in design-for-recycling solutions based on PP, PE and paper.
The challenges of transitioning to mono PE packaging for coffee
The ambitious goal of the collaboration between Cafés Méo and adapa was to replace the traditional packaging structures for coffee with „mono” PE solutions, while ensuring barrier properties and compatibility with the production lines.
Aware that the transition to recyclable packaging may take several years due to process capability and outsourcing tests, adapa is already making its expertise available to its customers today to support them in this transition and ensure their compliance before the 2030 deadline.
Over the past five years, the two companies have worked together to test and perfect packaging step by step in order to find the right solutions for Méo. Based on MDO-PE or BOPE, adapa has been able to supply films that are suitable for Méo's various production lines. The in-depth knowledge of adapa's research and development department on PE grades and its technical expertise in the machinery sector made it possible to adapt to Méo's configuration and products. The Méo pads are the first to be packaged according to the „Designed for Recycling” principle and are already on the market.
