With a strategic investment at the Burghausen site, Borealis intends to drive forward the industrial utilisation of its Borstar Nextension polypropylene technology.
Plastics manufacturer Borealis is investing 49 million euros in the expansion of its production capacities for single-site polypropylene (ssPP) at its Burghausen site. The focus is on Borstar Nextension technology, which sets new standards in terms of material purity, processability and performance. The aim is to make recyclable monomaterial solutions available on a large scale - particularly for applications in packaging, mobility, healthcare and the fibre industry.
Alternative to complex multilayer packaging
According to the company, the new process allows traditional multilayer packaging to be replaced by mono-material PP without compromising on barrier properties or mechanical performance. The resulting packaging solutions are not only recyclable, but also enable material savings and optimised use of resources along the entire value chain.
Support for regulatory objectives
In the wake of the planned EU packaging regulation (PPWR), recyclable solutions are becoming increasingly important. Borealis sees its Nextension grades as a future-proof answer to the regulatory requirements, particularly with regard to the goal of full recyclability of packaging by 2030. Initial applications in flexible packaging solutions have shown that the materials are also convincing in terms of seals, transparency and product protection.
Focus on customer growth and sustainability
„With the expansion of our Nextension PP production, we are creating the conditions for our customers to continue to meet increasing market and legal requirements in the future,“ says Craig Arnold, EVP Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Base Chemicals at Borealis. The investment is another example of the company's commitment to developing recyclable polymer solutions.
