Packaging manufacturers are adapting to new customers. There is an increasing demand for small quantities of customised packaging. The web portal „designyourpackaging by dynaments“ from colordruck Baiersbronn is aimed at this target group. Carsten Schnier gives an insight into the service.
Carsten Schnier is E-Business Manager and Head of „Packaging Digital“ at colordruck Baiersbronn and uses „designyourpackaging“ to create customised packaging, for example as a gift. He says: „Personalised packaging enhances a gift and delights the recipient.“
pj: Mr Schnier, your online portal solution „dynaments“ is a so-called white label solution. What services do you offer your customers with it?
Carsten Schnier: Our Portal solution "dynaments“ sees itself as an innovative E-Business offer. In this context, „white label solution“ means that the basic structure of the portal remains the same, but can be customised according to customer requirements. For example, our beta customer, the traditional Swiss bakery Marcel Schmid GmbH, operates a dynaments portal with its own look and feel for its speciality line „La Conditoria Sedrun-Switzerland“. After initial tests at the end of 2016, he has already used the web portal to offer guests at a customer event Customised packaging to hand over. He also used the web portal to design the packaging for his sweet delicacies for a trade fair appearance.
In addition to this specific example, dynaments customers have access to many other useful functions. These include a personalisation editor, 3D previews, a chat function, express production and much more.
pj: How did you come up with the idea for „designyourpackaging by dynaments“? What is special about this offer?
Carsten Schnier: There was strong demand from our customers and interested parties as well as from the market for packaging in smaller quantities and for personalised and individually designed packaging. We have therefore expanded our existing portfolio. The „Packaging Digital“ division has since complemented the „Packaging Production“ and „Packaging Service“ divisions. The idea for the „designyourpackaging by dynaments“ portal was born with the development of “Packaging Digital“.
With the portal solution, you can create your own customer portal as a White label solution operate. Alternatively, you have the option of using „designyourpackaging by dynaments“ for orders. You can either find the right packaging for the products in our portfolio or our packaging development team can design packaging that is then customised in a special area under „My products“.
pj: With „dynaments“, shop-in-shop offers or ad-hoc portals for one-off promotions for your customers are possible. What do we mean by this?
Carsten Schnier: Our portal solution also offers the option of connecting an existing shop or ERP system to our portal. Workflow to be connected. Parts can also be integrated. However, it can also be used completely in the design of our customers for one-off campaigns, such as the Christmas campaign or temporary marketing campaigns. We realise very different constellations for our customers: The customer becomes the direct user (B2B), or they in turn make the solution we provide available to their business customers (B2B2B) or consumers (B2B2C).
pj: You promise the customers of „designyourpackaging“ personalisation options. What does that mean in concrete terms?
Carsten Schnier: Personalised packaging enhances a gift and delights the recipient. In the „designyourpackaging“ portal, products can be designed manually in the editor, given a name and ordered accordingly. There is also the option of uploading an Excel list with personalised data. This could be the first and last names of congress participants, for example. These names are then entered in the designated place in the Print image embedded. However, changing quotes or numbers are also possible.
pj: „Designyourpackaging“ joins the ranks of numerous other online tools for printing services. Are you serving a new target group or have the demands of your existing customers changed?
Carsten Schnier: The demands of our previous customers have changed to the effect that, although high quantities are still required, small batch sizes and customised packaging are becoming increasingly important. There is a great deal of emphasis on high-quality trade fair samples, the desire to carry out market tests and smaller runs with exclusive quantities on the „Point of sale“ offer. We also serve new target groups, such as Start-up company, who were previously unable to purchase packaging in small batch sizes or small companies, hotels and clubs.
pj: Despite all the online services, your customer needs advice on customised solutions. What possibilities does the „dynaments“ portal solution offer in this respect?

pj: As a young entrepreneur, what do I have to do to order my first packaging from „designyourpackaging“?
Carsten Schnier: First I have to register on the homepage of „designyourpackaging by dynaments“. Once my account has been activated, I can look around the portal.
There are several ways to find your ideal packaging: the „Product finder“ tab displays all packaging available on the portal with preview images. Here you can use drop-down options and sliders to search for specific dimensions, ECMA codes, product groups or designs. Another approach would be to select the „Industries“ or „Occasions“ tabs. There we have pre-selected the packaging according to its intended use. Products that have been specially prepared or designed for you and should not be accessible to everyone are stored separately for you under „My products“.
If you have not yet found your perfect packaging, you can use the chargeable services of our packaging developers. We will then design the ideal packaging for you.
Once you have the right packaging, you can continue with the design. Designing is child's play in our editor. If a print file, for example from an advertising agency, is available, it can be uploaded directly using „Upload + Print“.
Finally, the packaging and design are checked again in a preview. All that remains to be done is to select the quantity, the varnish and the production time. Once they have been placed in the shopping basket, the shipping method is selected, the delivery address is specified and the order is placed. „Packaging Digital“ is the latest business division of the Baden-Württemberg packaging specialist colordruck Baiersbronn, which was only established last year. Founded in 1954 by Wilhelm Mack, the company is also active in the Packaging Production and Packaging Service divisions. Around 250 employees generate an annual turnover of 38.4 million euros and, according to the company, produce around one billion items of packaging per year.
