Companies are increasingly presenting packaging alternatives that are designed to be more sustainable or environmentally friendly than conventional plastic solutions. This has just become clear at the „Cosmetic Business“ trade fair, which ended on 6 June 2019 in Munich.
The example of Lipstick tubes was evident at the Cosmetic Business the new variety of packaging solutions. Consumers now have the choice between products made from wood, biopolymers, paper and cardboard, among others.
Lipstick tubes made of wood have been on cosmetics shelves for some time now. The Spanish manufacturer Quadpack presented a particularly sustainable alternative in Munich. The elegantly designed sleeve can be fitted with a refill mechanism.
Tutzing start-up relies on recycled paper fibres
The „CelPen“ from the Tutzing-based start-up Weimako. The development of the patent-pending pin sleeve was subsidised by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. According to information from Weimako as an economical alternative to thermoplastically manufactured plastic packaging. Italian manufacturer focusses on paper and cardboard
Paper and Cardboard box are the materials of choice of the Italian manufacturer MKTG Industries. He presented his „Eco Beauty Stick“, which is made entirely from FSC-certified cardboard material. The specialist for Cosmetic packaging has dispensed with any plastic components in the packaging suitable for lipsticks. The stick is made exclusively from paper and cardboard and, according to the company, is completely recyclable, biodegradable and compostable.

The developers at the manufacturer from Crema in Lombardy have given special thought to the mechanism with which the Care stick is pushed out of the sleeve. The inner part of the Sleeve is lined with a waxed paper layer so that the pen can be pushed out by lightly tapping the base of the sleeve.
Customers want more ecological packaging
MKTG Industries is responding to increased customer demand for more environmentally friendly packaging with the new packaging concept, explains company spokeswoman Evita Riboli on request. As early as 2015, the company was represented at Cosmopack in Bologna with a Eco Design Award was honoured. Several other awards for eco-design products were collected at the MakeUp trade fair in Paris in subsequent years.
Before the current, completely paper and cardboard Lipstick tube the company already had a solution in its portfolio in which the outer shell was made of cardboard but the inner part was still made of plastic.
