From 19 August, customers of Netto supermarkets may miss the so-called snap-on lid on some dairy product packaging. The discounter, which belongs to Edeka, is now putting selected own brands on the shelves „topless“ in order to save on plastic.

Every year, 100 tonnes of Plastic less is consumed if Yoghurt and pudding cups in future without the Plastic lid will be sold, predicts the supermarket chain with 4,260 shops in Germany. The products affected by the measure are „Gutes Land natural yoghurt“, „VivaVital lactose-free natural yoghurt“, „BioBio natural yoghurt“ and „Grandiso cream pudding“.

Small measures have a considerable effect

In the communication on the new, less plastic packaging, the company emphasises Net, that even supposedly small measures can have a considerable effect on reducing the carbon footprint. Plastic and packaging wastes could have. „This is how we design the Product packaging our Own-brand articles more sustainable,“ emphasises Christina Stylianou, Head of Corporate Communications at Netto.

In addition to this campaign, Netto is also pursuing other activities to reduce plastic waste. In a partnership with the WWF  the packaging is scrutinised intensively. As a result, the company boasts the largest range of reusable drinks of all German beverage companies. Discounter and a particularly wide range of unpackaged fruit and vegetables. Organic ginger and some organic cucumbers are even packaged with Laser technology directly labelled. In the case of ginger alone, around 43 tonnes of Plastic packaging per year, Netto has calculated.

Comprehensive strategy in partnership with the WWF

According to the company, further measures taken by Netto to reduce plastic include not using cotton buds with a plastic shaft, Reusable bags as well as washable Reusable nets for unpackaged fruit and baked goods, a Microplastic-free seal for drugstore products, lighter packaging for poultry meat in the self-service counters and the possibility to pack fresh meat and sausage products in Reusable boxes to buy. The latter measure alone saves around 20 tonnes of packaging material per year, writes Netto.

In its internal logistics, Netto now relies on Reusable transport crates for fruit and vegetables and, where possible, refrains from Disposable cartons. This in turn saves 20,000 tonnes of CO2-equivalents per year, reports the retail chain from Maxhütte-Haidhof.
