Demand is growing worldwide for packaging and labelling technology that protects packaged food and healthcare products from harmful and toxic substances. Screen and Lintec are now working together on new solutions.
In response to this trend and increasingly strict regulations, the manufacturer of inkjet printing solutions, Screen, is now cooperating with Lintec, a supplier of self-adhesive labelstock. Both aim to ensure the safety of low-migration (low permeability) labels and adhesive materials for food packaging.
„In our view, the entire supply chain is responsible for the safety of food packaging. We therefore work with partners wherever possible to increase the availability of safe, low-migration packaging.“ Taishi Motoshige, Manager Sales & Operations at Screen Europe
Based on its decades of research and development of safe and efficient inkjet digital printing machines, Screen launched its new low-migration label printing solution three years ago. The Truepress Jet L350UV+ LM offers greater safety for food packaging. This press features a nitrogen purge mechanism that dries UV-curable inks faster and further reduces their migration.
Low-migration label printers from Screen
The Truepress Jet L350UV+ LM is very popular in Europe and is being used successfully by numerous print service providers. „Even in times of coronavirus, interest in our low-migration label printing industry remains very high,“ explains Motoshige.
Lintec continuously improves the quality of its adhesives
In addition to low-migration labels play the adhesive for attaching the labels to packaging an equally important role. For many years, Lintec has invested in research and development to continuously improve the quality of its low migration adhesives. As part of their partnership, Screen and Lintec aim to ensure their technologies work seamlessly together for the efficient production of food and pharmaceutical packaging that meets the highest regulatory standards.
„Safety issues caused by the migration of ink and adhesive components in the drug and food supply chain, and the potential health risks they can pose to end users, are a cause for concern for brand owners and manufacturers.“ Soichiro Fujinaga, Technical Manager Lintec Europe.
As a result, labelling and packaging manufacturers are facing an ever-increasing demand for solutions that reliably protect food and pharmaceutical products from contamination by inks and adhesives.
Solutions fall well below the limit value
Screen and Lintec have have the combination of their low-migration solutions tested by several independent third parties. According to the test results, the total migration limit when combining the Truepress Jet L350UV+ LM from Screen with the extremely low-migration adhesive material from Lintec is 0.6 mg/100 cm2. According to the current EU regulation, a total migration limit of 10 mg/100 cm2 permissible.
