The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen showcases communication design from 30 countries. This year, special attention is being paid to packaging design.
The exhibition „Winners Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2020“ shows works from the field of communication design from 23 October 2020 to 3 January 2021. From books, commercials and posters to brand and corporate design as well as packaging: Visitors will experience the various facets of outstanding communication design in the exhibition. All of the works presented in the exhibition were honoured at the Red Dot Award: Brands & Communication Design 2020.
Packaging design - the first impression counts
This year, the communication design exhibition is focussing on packaging design. Packaging design plays a particularly important role wherever many similar products compete for the consumer's favour but cannot be experienced directly - for example in the food or cosmetics sectors. Packaging is both a means of advertising and communication, but its primary function is to protect the product and ensure that it can be transported, stacked and stored safely.

Wine bottles from the Judith Beck winery in Austria, for example, were honoured with a Red Dot: Best of the Best in the Packaging Design category. The labels of the „Reben.Reden“ line feature delicate illustrations that also serve as barcodes. The codes in turn lead to audio files in which each wine tells its own story.
A special feature of the exhibition is that it is not located at a central point in the museum. Instead, visitors encounter the communication design works at various points on their tour of the museum. One focus of the exhibition presentation can be found on level 1, including packaging design and the presentation of the Red Dot: Agency of the Year 2020.
