The new cardboard blister from Pernod Ricard Germany has been honoured with the VDW Innovation Award for Corrugated Board. The on-pack solution took first place in the „Promotional packaging“ category.

The cardboard blister as Sustainable on-pack solution replaces all plastic packaging that was previously used to attach the glasses to the bottles during promotions. It is made from FSC-certified cardboard and is 100 per cent recyclable.

„We are delighted to receive this award, as it recognises the work of our Procurement team, which has worked with great commitment, creative ideas and in close cooperation with our supplier to develop sustainable packaging options.“ Nicole Lichius, Head of Communication & CSR

The company has committed to switching all packaging to sustainable and innovative alternatives by 2030. By 2025, all Promotional items made from disposable plastics disappear from promotional campaigns. When developing the cardboard blister, the aim was to create a packaging solution that would replace previous plastic constructions and also attract the attention of shoppers.

This gave rise to the idea of developing an environmentally friendly alternative to the previous plastic constructions for the Ramazzotti and Havana Club brands in order to securely attach the glass to the respective bottle as an add-on item for the 2020 on-pack promotions. The challenge: Stability, firm connection to the bottle and visually appealing placement with good visibility on the glass and the ability to test the feel of the glass.

Together with Gissler & Pass the team has found a plastic-free and environmentally friendly alternative in the paper blister, which is already being extended to other brands. The new cardboard blister combines the S&R objectives with an innovative and visually successful folding technique. It sits firmly on the bottles and is 100 per cent recyclable.

Brand initiatives contribute to sustainability

Back in February 2021, Pernod Ricard introduced new, alternative packaging options for its well-known brands Absolut Vodka, Beefeater and Perrier-Jouët. Four years ahead of the actual target, the new Absolut bottle is made from 50 per cent recycled material. This success follows the development of a Paper bottles-prototype, which consists of 43 per cent recycled plastic and 57 per cent paper. The prototype bottle is currently being tested in Sweden and the UK and is being developed together with Paboco (The Paper Bottle Company) was realised.
