Awaken the Senses: This is the task for the design students in this year's Packaging Impact Design Award (PIDA) from BillerudKorsnäs. The packaging concept sought should not only be functional and visually appealing, but also interact with our senses.
According to BillerudKorsnäs, PIDA stands for "innovation, creativity and youthful curiosity". Since its launch in 2005, the competition has aimed to offer young talents and their ideas their own platform and incentivise innovative packaging designs. This year, the packaging designers of tomorrow "truly awaken the senses".
"When we launched PIDA, we wanted to challenge industry conventions and drive the development of packaging design. That's why we decided to highlight young new talent and their ideas. Our hope was that their creativity and intelligent solutions would contribute with inspiration and new thinking for the whole industry. And this is something that the students have really achieved. Over the years, we have seen many Intelligent and innovative packaging solutions and, of course, expectations are also high this year." The Packaging Impact Design Award For the first time, a new, digital format will enable a larger audience to take part in the event. Another new feature is that design schools in the USA will be included in the competition. In the May and June 2021 BillerudKorsnäs will organise the competition at four events: Germany (16 June 2021), Sweden, France and a joint event for the UK and the USA. An international winner will then be chosen in the final in September.
Packaging Impact Design Award: Awaken the Senses
The task this year is Awaken the Senses (Awaken the senses). The students are asked to design a sustainable, innovative and functional packaging concept that stands out from conventional applications, and the packaging must appeal to our senses. "It can be about creating an impression through Smell, sound or tactile experiencesg," explains Dahlberg. The competition picks up on a trend: Unboxing videos, in which consumers unpack a product and smell, touch, rustle and study every little graphic detail, are a frequently seen phenomenon on social media.
"In the future, we can expect packaging concepts with sound effects, visual illusions and augmented reality. In an increasingly digital world, packaging must stand out and be recognised in the Interaction to appeal to all the consumer's senses." Anders GathuMarketing Manager Cartonboard at BillerudKorsnäs
The participants compete in four different categoriesSustainability, user-friendliness, innovation and 'Gold Award - winner of all categories'. The jury at each individual event is made up of experts from the industry. The 'Gold Award' winners of the four PIDA events will meet for the international finale at the LuxePack in Monaco. The winning team of the final will be invited to a design summit in Frövi, Sweden, which will take place later this year.
"The Packaging Impact Design Award offers a win-win situation for both the students and the audience. In addition to the competition itself, PIDA offers a unique opportunity for the participating students to build relationships and network within the packaging industry - while the audience can enjoy an insightful and entertaining event full of inspiration, creativity and innovation," Anders Gathu is convinced.
