Huhtamaki, a provider of sustainable packaging solutions, is launching „Smilepack“, a 100% plastic-free moulded fibre carton for eggs, in the USA and Brazil.

The Smilepack was specially developed for the US egg industry and is intended to offer a sustainable alternative to conventional polystyrene or plastic egg packaging. The Smilepack egg cartons are made from fibres obtained from recycled paper which, according to the company, can be reused up to seven times. The cartons can be recycled in the regular paper stream and are compostable in private households and in industry. The cardboard is available in different colours.

According to Huhtamaki, Smilepack is already being used in the USA by a well-known producer and distributor of free-range eggs. By switching to fibre-based packaging, the company aims to save around 4.6 million plastic egg cartons per year.

„In the case of the Smilepack cartons, we offer a sustainable alternative to plastic packaging and have also optimised the design for easy handling and better visibility on the shelf for our customers,“ explains Gala Mansurova, Head of Eggs, Produce and Fruits Category, Fibre Foodservice Europe-Asia-Oceania at Huhtamaki.
