Gmund Papier is adding a new grade made from 100 per cent European hemp to its Bio Cycle collection. The collection also includes a paper with recycled paper fibres and a paper with pure cellulose.
After Gmund Papier developed a hemp paper for its Bio Cycle collection that contains up to 50 per cent cannabis pulp from European cultivation - supplemented by virgin fibre pulp - it has now succeeded in a paper with 100 per cent cannabis pulp to produce. The long fibres, which pose a challenge for paper production, make the new material both strong in structure and soft to the touch.
Hemp paper without colourants
The collection also offers Gmund Hemp 50%, a paper with recycled paper fibres, and Gmund Hemp 10%, a paper with pure cellulose. Gmund Hemp becomes completely without colourants produced.
The plant hemp (cannabis) is one of the oldest useful plants on earth and is known as the Popular renewable raw material. It is pest-resistant and easy to care for and produces more biomass than any other native crop.
Very early on in the history of human civilisation hemp was used to make paper. Until the second half of the 19th century, the majority of paper produced worldwide was made from hemp fibres. After hemp cultivation was banned in many countries, hemp paper also disappeared from the scene. The cultivation of industrial hemp is now permitted again in large parts of Europe.

Advantages for paper production
A hemp field produces four to five times as much paper as a forest of the same size. Hemp grows four metres a year and can be harvested three times a year. In comparison, a tree needs about seven years. Hemp fibres are long and very stable. Compared to wood pulp, hemp pulp offers a fibre that is four to five times longer, as well as higher tensile, tear and wet strength. Hemp improves the future recycling process and can be recycled particularly often. With Gmund Hemp 100%, Gmund Hemp 50% and Gmund Hemp 10%, the company offers three grades in grammages of 120 g/m² and 320 g/m² - for all common printing techniques.
