Multivac launches plastic trays with CurvCode digital watermark

Multivac, Filigrade and Bond Seafood are bringing plastic trays with the CurvCode digital watermark to Dutch supermarkets. This allows food packaging to be sorted by material and recycled.

Multivac, a specialist in packaging, processing, labelling and quality control solutions, has joined forces with FiliGrade Sustainable Watermarks and Bond Seafood. CurvCode was developed by FiliGrade and is intended to make an important contribution to the large-scale reuse of plastic. Waste can be separated into different types of food and non-food plastic with CurvCode. The newly designed recyclable fish packaging with CurvCode from Bond Seafood is now available in various supermarkets in the Netherlands.

In the development of the recycled PET (rPET) fish packaging, the Multivac worked together with a production partner. A nice side effect is that a Dutch PET tray with a Dutch innovation for the digital coding of plastic: CurvCode.

Separation of food packaging with CurvCode

Plastic pollution, plastic waste that ends up in incinerators. The waste problem is a hot topic worldwide. Plastic has fantastic properties and is often irreplaceable, but the waste problem is and remains huge. To contribute to a solution, FiliGrade from Eindhoven has developed the digital watermark CurvCode developed. With CurvCode you can Food packaging removed from household waste and sorted into different types of plastic can be recycled. These pure residual streams are suitable for recycling into new food packaging. This is a Important step towards utilising plastic waste as a raw material for food packaging and the transition to a sustainable plastics chain.

"We want to contribute to sustainable (environmental) solutions. We think along with you, test and optimise the packaging and the machines. This initiative with Bond Seafood and FiliGrade with the support of the retail market is a great example of a win-win situation."

CurvCode works like Braille. PET packaging is labelled with several raised dotsby which the type of plastic can be recognised. Waste processors using CurvCode recognition devices can, for example, mechanically separate different types of plastic. This means that plastic food packaging can be used within a circular plastic chain.

"The Cooperation in the production and waste chain is crucial. CurvCode is a chain solution. We are proud that we have now formed a coalition with around 30 parties that want to continue to work unanimously on the waste and sorting issue in the Netherlands. We want to accelerate and believe in high-quality sorting and recycling, in the Netherlands and later also in the rest of Europe."
