UK frozen food specialist Iceland has teamed up with Mondi to package its products more sustainably. With new functional barrier paper solutions, plastic consumption is to be reduced by 80 per cent.

Iceland replaces its previous packaging through Mondi's functional barrier paper for a range of products. The first newly packaged product range is the retailer's frozen chicken sticks.

The barrier paper is made from renewable raw materials, whereby Mondi carries out paper production and coating in-house and thus offers a fully integrated solution. Consumers should dispose of the paper in existing waste streams.

„We were the first UK retailer to publish our plastic footprint, along with a pledge to eventually become plastic-free. We knew we would need the expertise of global packaging suppliers like Mondi to fulfil this promise. Mondi's collaborative EcoSolutions-The new approach meant that our teams worked together to consider all elements of product manufacture and delivery. We now have a sustainable solution that is efficient to use, protects the products and fulfils our customers“ expectations." Stuart Lendrum, Head of Packaging, Quality and Food Safety at Iceland

Thanks to the high stiffness of the paper the new packaging is puncture-resistant and ensures an efficient filling process that runs seamlessly on the existing systems.

„Our functional barrier paper uses a wafer-thin coating that provides all the necessary barriers to keep food fresh and can still be recycled.“ Falk Paulsen, Sales & Business Development Director Extrusion Solutions, Mondi
