Mondi favours recyclable corrugated board

Mondi has developed a fully recyclable packaging solution for the Turkish company Warmhaus. Instead of foam inserts made from expanded polystyrene (EPS), the new Monocorr boxes are made from 100 per cent recyclable corrugated cardboard.

Mondi has developed a fully recyclable packaging solution for Warmhaus, a Turkish manufacturer of radiators and boilers for domestic heating. Instead of foam inserts made of expanded polystyrene (EPS), the new Monocorr boxes are made of 100 per cent recyclable corrugated cardboard, including the inserts.

Warmhaus was on the lookout for a environmentally friendly packaging solution, which would fulfil both the company's own sustainability goals and the requirements of customers at home and abroad. The Monocorr Box is easily recyclable in Turkey and supports Warmhaus' exports to the European Union, where some retailers are beginning to switch to EPS-free packaging, even for larger consumer goods. In the future, manufacturers may also need to Fees for extended producer responsibility (EPR) for EPS material.

Sustainability and product protection

„We were looking for a solution that would overcome the challenges we have with rigid foam products. We are committed to saving energy and protecting the environment and want our product packaging to reflect the same standards. In addition to their benefits in terms of sustainability Corrugated board packaging also improves product protection, transport and store them safely and cost-effectively. We have been using Monocorr boxes since August last year and have received positive feedback from our customers.“

Mondi's Monocorr boxes do not use expanded polystyrene and instead rely on recyclable corrugated cardboard.

The Monocorr box is not only fully recyclable, but also offers advantages in terms of logistics and shipping. The boxes are delivered flat and the corrugated Inserts take up 94 per cent less space during transport and storage than the previous EPS foam inserts. Assembled Monocorr boxes are more compact than the previous packaging, and the size of the outer box has been reduced by 6 per cent, allowing Warmhaus to stack 20 per cent more items on each shipping pallet.

„With our EcoSolutions approach, we were able to fulfil our customers' expectations of sustainable packaging and at the same time reduce improve the efficiency of their stacking and dispatch processes. This is an ideal solution for Turkey and all other markets. Eliminating the EPS foam element is key to bringing household appliance packaging into a circular economy. Solutions like our Monocorr Box can make an important contribution to the household appliance industry replacing EPS foam and moving to fully recyclable packaging.“
