Huhtamaki signs virtual power purchase agreement

On the way to using 100 per cent renewable electricity, Huhtamaki has now signed a virtual power purchase agreement in the United States.

Huhtamaki has set itself the goal of using 100 per cent renewable electricity by 2030. On the way to achieving this, the company has now signed a virtual power purchase agreement in the United States. The aim is to cover 30 per cent of electricity consumption in North America.

Huhtamaki has signed an agreement with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, LLC. Contract for the purchase of virtual electricity with a term of 12 years. NextEra Energy Resources is the world's largest producer of renewable energy from wind and sun. The 42-megawatt renewable energy contract covers around 30 per cent of Huhtamaki's current electricity requirements in the United States and Mexico, where the company has 18 production sites.

The agreement builds on the end of 2021 announced European VPPA agreement which covers 80 per cent of our European electricity consumption.“

The renewable energy that is the subject of the agreement is produced by a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, the Inertia Wind Energy Centre in the North Zone of the Electricity Reliability Council of Texas (Ercot) in Texas. The around 300-megawatt project to go into operation by the end of 2022 and save more than 71,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, which corresponds to the average electricity consumption of more than 12,000 households in the United States.
