Intelligent food label for digital traceability

The Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano (CFPR) is cooperating with Kaasmerk Matec and the p-Chip Corporation to equip its Parmigiano Reggiano cheese wheels with digital labels. This involves equipping food-safe casein labels with a micro-transponder that is smaller than a grain of salt and can be scanned.

Among other things, the new technology enables traceability, inventory tracking and control, product authentication, quality assurance checks, product serialisation and Consumer safety of all products of Parmigiano Reggiano.

„By being the first to use these secure digital labels for our cheeses, we can continue to guarantee the quality and uniqueness as well as the traceability and authentication of our products.“

Since 2002, a casein label with a unique and consecutive alphanumeric code has been attached to every wheel of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. Now p-Chip is launching a new range secure, digital tracking labels for the industry on the market. These p-chip micro-transponders in 2D codes, QR codes and/or data matrix codes are now being used by the Parmesan manufacturer. The result: a digital label that guarantees the food safety of the CFPR even beyond the regulatory requirements.

Casein labels with microtransponder

Kaasmerk Matec and the p-Chip Corporation have jointly developed an innovation programme for a microtransponder that is integrated into casein labels - a industry-standard, protein-based type of food/cheese labelling. The innovation combines food-safe casein labels with the p-chip microtransponder - a blockchain crypto-anchor that creates a digital twin for physical objects. This new food label, which can be scanned, is smaller than a grain of salt and extremely resistant and offers the Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano the highest level of innovative transparency and traceability.

„By integrating p-chip micro-transponders into casein labels, CFPR can better control its inventory, protect and differentiate its products against look-alike and sound-alike brands, and have access to unrivalled track-and-trace technology to respond quickly and efficiently in the event of recalls or similar incidents.”

Joe Wagner, CEO of p-Chip Corporation

Over the past two years, the Consorzio del Parmigiano Reggiano has extensively tested the p-Chip/Kaasmerk Matec casein label and the technical use of the Label for authentication and digital traceability of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese is authorised.

The new intelligent, digital food labels are being to 100,000 CFPR cheese wheels in the second quarter of 2022 is in place. This is the final phase of a large-scale test before the possibility of extending this technology to the entire production of Parmigiano Reggiano is examined.
