
Unilever is now using packaging made from recyclable paper for its Carte D'Or ice cream brand. Initially only in the UK, all of the brand's ice cream flavours will no longer be sold in plastic packaging. The switch means that the company uses 93 per cent less plastic per pack.
Every year Unilever with the new packaging more than Saving 900 tonnes of virgin plastic in the UK. The paper used comes from sustainably managed forests and controlled sources and is PEFC-certified (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). Both the cup and the lid can be recycled as normal household paper.

A certain amount of plastic is still required in the packaging to ensure that the ice cream remains fresh. Flavour and quality should also not be compromised and the packaging had to remain stable and durable. This is why the company uses Inner layer of the cups and the lid remain plastic, which, however, does not influence the possibility of recycling for consumers.
There is also a plastic seal to ensure that the ice cream stays fresh and safe in the packaging. At present, this seal is not recyclable, but a Team of experts working on the switch to a fully recyclable solution.
The company intends to use the knowledge and insights gained from the development and introduction of the new packaging to drive forward its company-wide efforts to reduce plastic packaging worldwide.

The new Carte D'Or packs contain a QR code that invites shoppers to interactively engage with the brand and learn more about the key ingredients, that the Carte D'Or-flavour. This includes the brand's long-standing commitment to sourcing Rainforest Alliance-certified vanilla and cocoa.
The switch from Carte D'Or to paper cups is the latest step on the way to the Unilever's global plastics targets, which include halving the amount of new plastic in packaging and an absolute reduction in plastic consumption of more than 100,000 tonnes by 2025.
