Following the division of the Berlin-based Alba Group, a new environmental services provider specialising in the sorting and processing of plastic waste has been formed under the leadership of Axel Schweitzer: Interzero. The parts of the company that were transferred to Interzero are said to have recently achieved an annual turnover of around one billion euros.

Interzero is the name of a new international group of companies from Germany which, according to the information provided, specialises in Sustainable and customised recycling and cycle management stands.

„Our imminent departure from the Alba Group marks the beginning of a new era for us as an independent company committed to a ‚world without waste‘. Our new name explains exactly what we do: We offer our „zero waste solutions“ internationally to transition from a linear to a circular economy - and call it Interzero for short.“

Under the leadership of Dr Axel Schweitzer, Interzero is being restructured, building on the core of the Interseroh Group. Around 2,000 employees in 10 European countries is what Interzero will have after the complete reorganisation. The company is fully focussed on the circular economy and, according to its own information, generates a turnover of around one billion euros in its current structure.

„The foundation of Interzero with headquarters in Cologne is based on more than 30 years of experience of our employees and managers in the circular economy as well as long-standing customer relationships in many different sectors - from the construction industry, the consumer goods industry and the food trade to food and automotive manufacturing,“ says Dr Schweitzer. „This broad positioning in conjunction with a strong focus on digital platforms and the associated innovations make the difference for our customers. With our focus on expertise and process design, which is new to the industry, we have big plans for the future.“

Circuit solutions analogue and digital

The Group consists of three strategic pillars: Sustainable closed-loop solutions - analogue and digital - are the task of the Interzero Circular Solutions (ICS). The experts develop customised circular concepts with the aim of avoiding waste or using it for new applications. This means that they organise worldwide take-back systems for packaging, products and materials of all kinds for customers. Develop and operate complete circular solutions for companies and offer comprehensive consulting services for waste prevention in the sense of Design for Recycling

As the market leader in Europe, the Plastics Recycling Division stands for comprehensive expertise in plastics recycling. Interzero Plastics Recycling (IPR). As an innovation leader, the division covers all recycling processes and technologies, from intelligent collection systems and high-tech sorting systems to recyclate production and chemical recycling. This includes five high-tech sorting plants and the development and operation of three in-house recycling and production plants for the extraction and marketing of high-quality recycled raw materials.

The connecting element between the two areas mentioned is the dual system Interseroh+. The innovative offer of this „recycling alliance“ is aimed at all companies that not only want to fulfil their legal obligation to license packaging, but also want to recycle it themselves. Responsibility for closing recycling and raw material cycles want to take over.

The Digitalisation of circular processes and the provision of digital platforms and a nationwide network of service, disposal and recycling partners complete Interzero's offering.

Innovation, research and development as a service for customers

Another overarching element of Interzero is innovation and research services. The Competence centre for plastics recycling in Maribor, Slovenia is the only state-accredited research institution in the EU that specialises in the development and analysis of recycled plastics. The competence centre thus Europe-wide benchmarks for the implementation of uniform quality standards and helps Interzero's customers to develop environmentally friendly packaging and products made from recycled materials. I

n Maribor arise Formulations for recycled plastics with the properties required by the customer. Experts from Interzero not only analyse the materials and design of the packaging, but also, for example, the practical sortability. Positive results are recognised by the „Made for Recycling Interseroh+“ that companies are authorised to print on their packaging as a decision-making aid for consumers. Interseroh+ developed this test method together with the bifa environmental institute, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV has tested and confirmed it.

„With our new set-up, we at Interzero are the partner for our customers, to manage recycling processes with smart solutions and convert linear structures into raw material cycles. We are feeling a strong tailwind from business and society in favour of our zero waste solutions. This is an excellent basis and the right time to consistently realise our vision of a world without waste,„ says Dr Schweitzer.
