The German Packaging Institute e. V. (dvi) announced the winners of the Gold Awards at this year's German Packaging Award at Fachpack in Nuremberg. The six best innovations of 2022 come from the categories of cost-effectiveness, sustainability, digitalisation, packaging machines and young talent.
The dvi had already announced the winners of this year's German Packaging Award at the end of August. The winners of the Gold Awards were also announced on the first day of Fachpack in Nuremberg. "With the Gold Award, the jury of the German Packaging Award honours innovations that stand out from the crowd. even from the circle of packaging award winners", explains Dr Bettina Horenburg, Director Corporate Communications at Siegwerk Druckfarben and, as a member of the dvi board, overall responsible for the German Packaging Award.
In the end it was six times gold. The top honours went to a fundamental innovation in the field of film lamination technology; a remarkably sustainable and ingeniously child-proof box for washing tabs; an extremely weight-reduced and fully recyclable two-piece PE mono-material tube with a high PCR content; software for balancing and optimising recyclability; an innovative pharmaceutical machine solution for the smallest batch sizes, high format flexibility and minimal operator intervention; and a unique carton packaging for the "floating" dispatch of uncooked eggs.
In their laudatory speech, jury member Professor Jens-Peter Majschak from TU Dresden and dvi Managing Director Winfried Batzke emphasised the innovative achievements of the gold award winners in the packaging machinery and economic efficiency categories respectively. Katja Feeß gave the laudatory speech for the winners in the Young Talent category. Fachpack had provided a special prize here. The two Gold Award winners in the Sustainability category were honoured by the representative of Packaging Valley, Martin Buchwitz. Malte Andresen from media partner Packaging Journal was responsible for honouring the winner in the digitalisation category.
One gold for efficiency
POLIFILM EXTRUSION GmbH has come up with a fundamental innovation in the field of film lamination technology. The gold award-winning, self-laminating polyethylene (PE) film decomplexes production and brings significant savings in terms of energy and investment. Not only is the conventional drying process no longer necessary, but also the curing time of at least two days. The system can therefore be designed much more compactly and the handling of solvents and solvent residues is no longer necessary.

Two gold medals for sustainability
Procter & Gamble Service GmbH was also delighted to win gold. Their P&G ECOCLIC® Box for liquid laundry capsules is an innovative box for detergent tabs that saves considerable amounts of plastic and transport capacity and consists of 70 per cent FSC-certified material. As added value, the box offers a new, ingenious child safety lock, which is very simple and inconspicuously integrated, yet works reliably.
A Gold Award went to the Albéa Group from France for its Tube EcoFusion Top with Thin-Wall & PCR Max. The two-part tube was designed with sustainability in mind in an impressive way. By reducing the tube wall thickness to an absolute minimum, it was possible to save around 30 per cent in weight. The optimisation of the closure cap even led to an 80 percent weight saving compared to comparable standard closures. The PE monomaterial tube is fully recyclable and consists of 42 per cent PCR.

One gold for digitalisation
The Chira software solution from cyclos-HTP GmbH is also absolutely worthy of gold. The innovative tool enables a practicable, legally and standard-compliant and transparent, quantitative assessment of the recyclability of packaging. The assessment is carried out for all material types and with an EU-wide scope in national differentiation and in compliance with the German minimum standard. The programme includes intelligent query menus for individual packaging types and archiving of the assessments. The software can also be used as an instrument for packaging optimisation. For example, the effect on recyclability is displayed directly when individual design details are varied.

One gold for packaging machines
Gold also shines in the pharmaceutical machinery sector. With Versynta microBatch, Syntegon Technology GmbH has developed an absolutely convincing solution that is extremely compact and can be used for a wide range of applications. High format flexibility with minimal operator intervention offers. The innovation leads to an increase in reproducibility, process monitoring and documentation as part of the increased level of automation. It also reduces the possibility of errors and expensive downtimes for format changes, sterilisation or faults.

One gold medal for young talent
The youngest gold winner comes from Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design Halle. The student Hélène Fontaine receives it for a Innovative pump dispenser with standard DIN thread and integrated dosing spoonwhich allows safe dosing especially for people with motor impairments or visual impairments.
