EDEKA launches its own reusable system - RECUP in 800 bakery outlets

The EDEKA Group is taking a further step in terms of waste avoidance and is introducing its own reusable system for out-of-home consumption with regood. Meanwhile, Recup announces that it is also being used by national bakery chains.

The EDEKA Group is taking a further step towards reducing waste and is introducing its own reusable system for out-of-home consumption with regood. Meanwhile, Recup announces that hundreds of bakery outlets are now also using its own system.

Whether it's a hot bar, salad bar or catering business - the regood cups and bowls can be used anywhere. Customers can purchase the reusable containers for a deposit at their participating EDEKA or Marktkauf store and return them there after use for a refund of the deposit value. The reusable containers manufactured in Germany will be available from January 2023.

Use in EDEKA and Marktkauf stores

When developing the regood containers, EDEKA says it focussed primarily on high quality and a more sustainable design. The durable cups and bowls made from recyclable material can be used flexibly and are also suitable for the microwave and dishwasher. They will also be certified with the Blue Angel seal, which characterises environmentally friendly products and services.

EDEKA customers can purchase the containers for their to-go food and drinks directly from participating EDEKA and Marktkauf stores for a deposit value, depending on whether it is a bowl or a cup. After use, the containers can be returned there for a refund of the deposit value.

Meanwhile, Recup announces that over 800 new bakery outlets have joined its own reusable system. In addition to small to medium-sized bakeries, nationwide chains such as Kamps and Le Crobag are also involved. The individual franchise partners and their bakeries are also gradually joining in.

Reusable will be mandatory in 2023

Kamps, Le Crobag and EDEKA are taking this step in response to the reusable packaging obligation for delivery services and restaurants, which will come into force on 1 January 2023. Anyone with a sales area of more than 80 square metres and more than five employees will be subject to the legal obligation to offer reusable packaging for takeaway. A survey in the summer showed that 76 per cent of respondents are not yet aware of the reusable packaging obligation but welcome them in principle.
