The manufacturers of aluminium tubes and aerosol cans organised in the Tubes, Cans and Extruded Parts Association of Aluminium Deutschland e. V. are generally satisfied with their deliveries to the German market in 2022.
Weaker demand for aluminium tubes at the end of 2022 led to a slight decline in deliveries of two percent. Nevertheless, the total volume of 765 million units is a very respectable result given the challenging economic situation. Deliveries of aluminium aerosol cans even enjoyed an increase in 2022. strong increase of 15 per cent to 573 million doses.
The decline in deliveries of tubes was particularly pronounced in the due to brisk demand from the pharmaceutical sector The food and household sector fell short of expectations. For aerosol cans, the dominating market for deodorants in terms of volume were convincing. Satisfactory demand for hair care products also contributed to the good overall result.
Sustainability and energy at the top of the agenda
The topic Sustainability remains a key issue alongside the threatening energy price trend in 2022 in the industry. Aluminium packaging is very well positioned in terms of sustainability thanks to its impressive material properties, which guarantee optimum product protection, and its excellent recyclability.
Although energy prices have calmed down slightly in the meantime, the situation is likely to remain volatile and somewhat unpredictable overall due to the continuing uncertainty of the global political situation. In addition, energy price falls only reach industry and consumers with a noticeable delay. Further energy savings will therefore remain a key task for companies in 2023; This is particularly true as energy prices are unlikely to ever return to pre-crisis levels.
Skills shortage as one of the biggest challenges
„One of the biggest challenges in the coming years will be the glaring shortage of skilled labour. Working on the production line in shifts is not popular with the next generation of Generation Z employees. Innovative company management, production planning and employee concepts are needed to increase the attractiveness of a modern, meaningful and crisis-proof workplace in the sustainable aluminium packaging industry. This also includes continuing to work on improving the image of packaging, which is still wrongly reduced to the idea of waste by large sections of the population. This is the only way the industry will be able to survive the fierce competition for qualified labour.„
Clemens Behrenbruch, Chairman of the Tubes, Cans and Extruded Parts Association of Aluminium Deutschland e. V.
The existing order backlog currently makes the industry cautiously optimistic for the first quarter. „However, if consumer sentiment and demand on the FMCG markets deteriorate due to the expected recession in Germany and the ongoing loss of purchasing power, this will have a negative impact on the industry, the situation could deteriorate from the second quarter of 2023. Continued good demand from the pharmaceutical sector could have a stabilising effect. However, there are currently still too many question marks for a reliable medium-term forecast,“ summarises Behrenbruch.
