Greiner Packaging has had its capsule packaging made from a compostable polymer certified by TÜV Austria Belgium nv. The packaging has been awarded the „OK Home Compost“ certificate, which is awarded to products that can be composted at low temperatures.
Greiner Packaging has been successfully producing packaging for the capsule market for many years. Capsules are repeatedly criticised because of the waste they produce. The company has developed a Coffee capsule developed from a compostable polymer. This can easily be recycled at home in your own compost.
„With our packaging, we wanted to contribute to offering an environmentally friendly alternative to conventional capsule packaging. It was important for us to find a solution that meets our high quality standards for product protection. We invested a lot of time in the development and, above all, the search for the ideal polymer and ultimately found a material that has excellent barrier properties and thus protects the capsule contents very well against oxygen and flavour loss.“

The certification phase for the new home-compostable capsule by TÜV Austria Belgium nv was completed a few weeks ago. Numerous tests have confirmed that the capsules meet the high requirements of the „OK Home Compost“ certificateThis is only awarded to products that can also be composted at low temperatures - for example in the compost heap in your own garden.
„To obtain TÜV certification, the capsules must be degraded within 26 weeks. Our home compostable capsules were already degraded in 15 weeks. We are delighted to have successfully completed the certification phase, which now enables us to offer our customers and subsequently consumers completely sustainable capsule packaging. Around 50 per cent of all household waste consists of organic material. A percentage that will become even more important in the future due to the increasing popularity of biodegradable products such as packaging material or disposable cutlery. We can now also contribute to this with our certified capsule packaging.“
