MC-Bauchemie, an international manufacturer of construction chemicals, has switched its packaging concept to sustainable stretch bonnet solutions from MSK. The stretch bonnet gives the products high load stability and protection from the weather. A connected MSK pallet logistics system with conveyor technology over two levels ensures fully automatic pallet transport.
Because the previous packaging systems at both its Bottrop and Esslingen plants were getting on in years, MC-Bauchemie contacted the packaging machine manufacturer MSK some time ago for an alternative packaging solution. Up to this point, the company had been using stretch wrappers to pack its products such as bags, buckets, canisters, drums and cartons. In close co-operation between MC-Bauchemie and MSK, an extensive series of test trials to develop the optimum packaging solution for these chemical products.
Test trials have been convincing
MSK was not the only machine manufacturer with whom the construction chemicals manufacturer embarked on the search for a new system concept. The comparative test trials in Kleve ultimately convinced the company of MSK's sustainable and stable stretch bonnet technology.
„The majority of our products go directly to the construction site, so they are better protected from the weather. We also use less film per load unit, which is particularly important for us in terms of sustainability. The speed of the process, weather resistance and reduced use of materials are decisive advantages of stretch bonnet packaging for us.“

Within a short space of time, MC-Bauchemie ordered three MSK Tensiontech stretch bonnet systems for its production plant in Bottrop. A pallet logistics system with a connection to the stretch bonnet system was also installed. This was followed by a new MSK Wraptech stretch bonnet system at the Esslingen plant in 2022.
Resource-saving stretch bonnet technology
Compared to the previous systems, which wrap the load units both vertically and horizontally with film, the stretch bonnet is an efficient and sustainable packaging solution. The products are stably packaged for transport and storage and are securely protected against dust and moisture by the closed bonnet. Thanks to the patented MSK device for gathering the film (EP 1 353 847) and MSK vertical film stretching process (EP 1 717 148), thin films and minimised film consumption are possible. The systems work very reliably, without downtimes during reel changes and with a low energy consumption of less than 0.07 kilowatts per pallet. The machine head can be lowered to working level for maintenance work.
Several reference visits have already taken place at the MC-Bauchemie plants with interested manufacturers, in which the project managers at MC-Bauchemie expressed their satisfaction with the technical and interpersonal handling of the project as well as the service. „The projects in collaboration with MSK were all characterised by a high level of professionalism. The communication is good. The systems fully correspond to what was agreed. As a customer, we feel that we are in very good hands,“ explains Burkhard Bergmann.
Plants for chemical building materials
„In addition to weather resistance, load safety, MFH suitability, speed and resource conservation are important criteria when packaging our construction chemical products,“ says Burkhard Bergmann, describing the requirements once again. At the Bottrop plant, three MSK Tensiontech bonnet stretcher various building materials in bags, buckets and cartons on Euro pallets with a capacity of up to 90 pallets per hour each. For the Esslingen plant, MC-Bauchemie opted for an MSK Wraptech stretch bonnet machine specially developed for the building materials and chemical industry. The single-format machine is customised for standard applications and packs sacks, canisters and drums on Euro pallets and also transports IBC containers. All this with an output of up to 50 pallets per hour. The load units weigh up to 1.5 tonnes. „MSK was most responsive to our wishes. The systems are not off-the-shelf, but configured to our requirements. The systems are also very robust and solid,“ adds Burkhard Bergmann, explaining the reasons for choosing MSK systems.
Automated pallet logistics system
By depositing the film on the top board of the pallet, the stretch bonnets enable a film-free pallet base, the so-called MSK collar stretch. This enables easier pallet handling with industrial trucks or in automated racking systems. Once the load has been secured by the MSK collar stretch system, an MSK pallet conveyor system takes over the pallets and conveys them over two levels to defined pick-up points for forklift trucks. The logistics system comprises various roller conveyors, rotary segments and vertical conveyors.
The control of the conveyor system is linked to that of the packaging system. One The MSK EMSY software visualises the entire system. is made possible. This also offers maintenance management, remote maintenance or online diagnostics and provides consumption and production statistics. The clearly structured, intuitive user interface, easy-to-understand status information and simple, graphic-supported parameter settings reduce the operator's familiarisation time.
