Despite their convenience, coffee capsules are not without controversy. The issue of recyclability in particular is causing a stir. With CoffeeB, the Edeka retail group is now introducing a product that, according to the company, is garden-compostable.
Unlike previous systems, CoffeeB does not pack the coffee in aluminium capsules. Instead, the roasted coffee is pressed into small balls and surrounded by a patented, plant-based protective layer, which effectively protects it from flavour loss and keeps it stable during the brewing process. As a result, the entire coffee ball Fully garden compostable according to the company. The Coffee Balls are available in eight different flavours from lungo to ristretto and in different strengths.
„As part of Edeka's sustainable orientation, CoffeeB is a great addition to our product portfolio. The innovative zero-waste coffee system shares our goal of reducing resource consumption. With this collaboration, we are making a further contribution to preserving not only enjoyment, but above all nature and the environment for future generations,“ says Markus Mosa, Chairman of the Executive Board of Edeka Head Office Foundation & Co. KG, Hamburg.
Available in all shops
The product was developed by Delica, a subsidiary of the Swiss retailer Migros. Until now, the system was only available in Switzerland and France. „We are delighted to have Edeka on board as a competent food retail partner in the first year of the roll-out in Germany. We share common goals in terms of sustainability. We want to use CoffeeB to sustainably reduce coffee capsule waste, and Edeka wants to significantly minimise the consumption of resources. Together, we can avoid the more than 100,000 tonnes of waste caused by coffee capsules worldwide every year,“ says Frank Wilde, Head of CoffeeB.
CoffeeB is available at Edeka and in the Marktkauf-SB department stores that are also part of the network. The launch of CoffeeB in Germany will be supported by an extensive 360-degree communication campaign comprising TV, print, social media and influencer collaborations. In the stores, tastings, posters, floor stickers, brochures and special furniture draw attention to the innovation.
