With immediate effect, Tchibo is starting another test run with the dispatch of reusable bags. The Hamburg-based company is using 26,000 reusable bags made from recycled plastic, which will be recycled again at the end of their life. For customers, the switch to the reusable solution is free of charge and deposit-free - as they are currently selected at random.
Yoga trousers and espresso beans are quickly ordered online and make you happy. Disposable packaging waste, on the other hand, is less so. Packaging boxes pile up next to recycling containers, disposable shipping bags fill the yellow bag. To further reduce the consumption of resources in online trading Tchibo wants to continue its journey towards a reusable solution for online retail.
How do I return the reusable bag to Tchibo? The empty bag can be returned to Tchibo shops or folded up and dropped in the letterbox be returned. If customers have a return, it can be handed in at a post office as usual.
In the new test phase Tchibo among other things, how long the reusable bag can be kept in circulation, how well the associated processes work and how the preparation process can be organised.
In summer 2020, Tchibo introduced the sustainable shipping option as part of the promotional project praxpack was tested for the first time by the Ministry of the Environment for Education and Research together with Otto and the Avocadostore. At that time, the main focus was on customer acceptance and the response rate. The latter was an excellent 81 per cent. A further test run followed in Austria in 2022, including with dm, Thalia and Intersport. Here, Tchibo has already gained initial experience with the shops as return locations.
Less packaging waste through more reusable packaging
The current Tchibo Shipping packaging already consists of at least 80 per cent recycled material. The company is taking a decisive step forward in the fight against increasing packaging waste with its reusable solutions.
„The reusable bag is another important step towards a more sustainable online business. After several pilot projects, we want to use this test run to learn how to optimise our reusable logistics processes so that we can also offer this more environmentally friendly shipping option economically.“
Alexander Ralfs, Tchibo Director of Supply Chain Management & Logistics
Reduce, reuse, recycle - Tchibo also follows these three key elements of the circular economy. The company has been optimising its packaging solutions for years and uses four levers to achieve this: Reduce the amount of material used and promote reusable solutions. Use materials from certified responsible sources. Improve recyclability and identify and develop new approaches.
