Cologne-based plastics specialist igus wants to promote a sustainable plastics economy with its „Chainge“ recycling platform. The company has now invested in the Hamburg-based start-up cirplus. Both companies are pursuing the shared vision of closing the plastics loop and initiating a revolution in the recycling trade for technical and standard thermoplastics.
Since 2019, igus has made it possible for customers to recycle used energy chains regardless of the manufacturer. In October 2022, the „Chainge“ online platform was created to easy digital access to recycling to offer. The marketplace can now also be used to quickly and easily transfer previously unconsidered technical plastics to the circular economy. Processing companies also have the opportunity, purchase recycled plastics with guaranteed quality standards. This expanded market access makes it easier to achieve the announced recyclate utilisation quotas. In order to further advance the digital circular economy, igus has now invested in the circular start-up cirplus invested.
Shaping the future of recycled plastics with digital technology
While igus has already enjoyed success in the digital trade of engineering plastics, cirplus is primarily active in the markets for standard thermoplastics. The Hamburg-based start-up offers disposal companies, recyclers and product manufacturers a digital marketplace through which they can buy standardised recyclates in a secure, traceable and cost-efficient way - worldwide. The team of technology and digital experts thus promotes the networking of the plastics and recycling industries. In addition, cirplus has developed the DIN SPEC 91446 and DIN SPEC 91481 standards. initiated as the world's first standards for high-quality plastics recycling.
It was the motivation, through the combination of digitalisation and standardisation to establish reliable and transparent supply chains for plastic recyclates. DIN SPEC 91446 was also awarded the DIN Prize 2022 by the German Institute for Standardisation e.V. in the categories of climate protection and innovation. The common goal of making the regenerative use of plastics easier than ever before brings igus and cirplus together.
With „Chainge“, igus already offers its customers quick and easy access to the recycling of engineering plastics. With cirplus, igus has now gained a strong partner for the digital trade of standard recyclates. So In future, customers will benefit from a network that links the recycling trade in technical and standard thermoplastics and makes it possible to obtain everything simply and transparently from a single source. With over 60 years of experience in plastics, igus has a global network and offers access to constant material flows. Together with the experience and software expertise of cirplus, the course is being set for the next level of digital recycling trade. The two companies are therefore looking forward to the possibilities of a strategic partnership that offers potential for building the world's largest AI platform for circular plastics.
„Thinking about how we can expand our activities and make them available to everyone brought us together with cirplus. With this investment, we are setting an example of thinking about sustainability together and creating a network to achieve more.“
Michael Blass, Managing Director e-chain systems at igus
„In igus, we have found a partner who shares our values and is working with us to drive forward digitalisation in the plastics industry with the aim of closing the loop completely. The experience of igus in the field of engineering plastics coupled with our expertise in digitalisation and standard thermoplastics is the ideal prerequisite for paving the way towards a closed-loop economy - across all industries.”
Christian Schiller, Managing Director at cirplus
