The Fiskars Re-New scissors come in brand new fibre-based gift packaging, developed in a co-operation between the Metsä Group and the Fiskars Group. The Muoto 3D inner packaging and a box made of folding boxboard from Metsä Board encase the Fiskars ReNew scissors made of recycled material. The new Muoto 3D fibre packaging can be also for complex shapes, such as rounded designs, which are traditionally reserved for plastic packaging.

In the case of the ReNew scissors in Metsä Boards Excellence Centre in Äänekoski Muoto 3D inner packaging, which reflects the iconic shape of the classic scissors, is combined with outer packaging made from Metsä Board's virgin fibre paperboard.

The main raw material for Muoto 3D fibre packaging is renewable and sustainably grown wood from Finland. From this in a joint demo plant of Metsä Group and Valmet in Äänekoski the finished product is made from wet wood fibre pulp.

„The advantage of Muoto 3D fibre packaging is that it can be shaped in a variety of ways: They are pressed into their final shape using a new 3D technology. This also allows, for example, the production of rounded, complex shapes, as known from the plastics industry. In addition, packaging structures with good protective properties can also be produced that are lightweight and stable at the same time.“

Tarja Heikkilä, Product Manager at Metsä Spring, the innovation company of the Metsä Group

According to Heikkilä Muoto is currently in a demo stage, which means that its potential is being tested on the market - an example of this is the current collaboration with the Fiskars Group, a manufacturer of sustainable tools and utensils.

„Pioneer design is sustainable. It encompasses the entire supply chain, from brainstorming, procurement and production through to business development. We want to challenge the throwaway culture in all its forms. Muoto's production technology and raw material make the product a good example of interesting new initiatives we are working on in collaboration with sustainable partners.“
