Award for label-free yoghurt drink bottle

By dispensing with the usual plastic banderole and instead the brand name is embossed directly into the bottle made from recycled PET, this packaging can save 42 per cent CO2 and 70 per cent fossil raw materials. In order to both promote and drive forward innovative ideas for sustainable packaging, Emmi organised the Fair Inno Pack competition together with 38 selected suppliers. The label-free yoghurt drink bottle concept presented there comes from Envases Aesch AG in Switzerland, a sister company of Envases Öhringen, which also emerged from the Huber Packaging Group and is part of the Envases Europe group of companies. As One of around 80 entries submitted, it was assessed by a jury consisting of marketing, purchasing and research & development experts. With the Labelfree bottle, Envases is one of the seven manufacturers whose concepts finally prevailed.

The 150 ml bottle for yoghurt drinks is not only made from 100% recycled PET, but also impressed the jury with its reduced use of materials: 1.9 g of plastic is saved in the bottle body, 0.8 g by not using a label and 1.2 g of plastic by using the ultra-light cap. This reduces the weight per bottle by 20 per cent and CO2 emissions by 16 g. With one million bottles produced, a whole four tonnes of plastic and 16 tonnes of CO2 can be saved!

Display

Envases also provided a proposal for secondary packaging: To make this as attractive and resource-saving as possible there is no need for an outer packaging box. Instead, the bottles are grouped together as a tray of 6 in a cardboard carrier, through which the QR codes remain visible and scannable at the same time.

As one of the winning products, the idea is now being pursued further within the Emmi team and checked for their feasibility.

Sustainability is a top priority for Envases Europe, which also includes Envases Aesch AG, and is already being implemented in many areas, for example by increasing energy efficiency and reducing material consumption. In 2022, the group of companies was awarded the bronze medal in the EcoVadis assessment system. At the beginning of the year, the company joined the Scienced Based Target Initiative, with the support of which binding, scientifically based targets and measures are to be defined in order to make the entire company even more sustainable.
