What is the best way to make a labelstock sustainable? How can it best conserve valuable resources? Herma is presenting a new adhesive material at Labelexpo 2023 to answer this question. Its three main components - the PE film label material is made from post-consumer recyclate, the adhesive is CO2-footprint and a new type of underlay material - were selected and combined with a view to maximising sustainability.

Herma rPE PCR white (grade 856) is used as the label material. For the production of this white PE film exclusively uses plastics from post-consumer recycling (PCR). Behind this, for example, are the actual costs, which have risen sharply in recent decades. End consumer waste - without the addition of new granulate. The origin of the label material can be visually recognised by the so-called specks. This makes the new adhesive composite ideal for visually appealing labels that emphasise the recycled design and are preferably used on PE surfaces.

„The use of recycled plastic in a new product is a further contribution by Herma to supporting sensible material cycles. The film material also shows, how important it is to overcome the convenient throwaway mentality. After all, we as a society are only at the beginning of the circular economy.“

The new 72F pressure-sensitive adhesive was jointly developed by Herma and BASF specifically for this adhesive material. It is a pressure-sensitive adhesive that does not emit any CO2-footprint (Zero PCF). The raw materials required for its production are partly based on biomass from organic waste instead of fossil raw materials in accordance with the so-called biomass balance approach. During their growth phase, the plants in question have recently released the climate-damaging CO2 withdrawn.

TÜV Rheinland Energy GmbH, an independent certification body, has confirmed BASF's PCF calculation for the adhesive used. On the product side, the new 72F pressure-sensitive adhesive combines a high tack with very high cohesion and excellent final adhesion. „This means that the adhesive offers environmental benefits without label printers and users having to compromise on quality,“ says Marcus Gablowski.

The innovative Paper carrier material used here for the first time in the world, contributes to minimising the consumption of resources. Details are currently still subject to confidentiality. „However, we will announce details during Labelexpo,“ emphasises Gablowski.
