With Mono APET Floatfilm Peel, ppg > offers a new packaging concept for the closure of sliced meat packaging. The top film meets the requirements of the food retail trade and is characterised as recyclable flexible packaging.
The centrepiece of the buoyant top film (density < 1 g/cm3) is the certified recycling compatibility of their peel structure. This was approved by the independent Institute cyclos HTP certified and thus fulfils best-case design criteria in food retailing.
Due to its specific properties, PET offers many advantages over other materials such as PE and PP. As a result, in future Flexible packaging consolidates its benefits for the circular economy. In particular, PET can be mechanically recycled more effectively and more often without any significant loss of quality. In the case of drinks bottles, this material cycle has been established for decades.
In order to achieve the same benefits for the large quantities of sliced meat packaging, it is necessary to design the PET trays in such a way that they are available for recycling with as few impurities as possible. One aspect of this is the Conversion from APET/PE combinations to mono APET materials. Another issue is the residue of the sealing media on the trays. As PET itself is not sealable, the challenge is to seal the packaging completely tightly and at the same time ensure consumer-friendly opening. The whole thing has to be designed in such a way that no disturbing residues of the sealing medium remain on the PET tray during recycling.
With the certification of the recycling-compatible peel structure of the Mono APET float film, ppg > has succeeded in doing just that. All the quality aspects of conventional concepts such as excellent Transparency, high packaging efficiency and maximum product protection obtained. The key features of the ppg > Mono APET float film include a secure seal and a consumer-friendly peel effect. For easy separation in recycling, the material combination is floatable and offers comparable packaging performance to conventional APET/PE packaging. Compatibility with existing packaging systems is always important for users. This is possible without mould adaptation and the overall packaging concept includes a Recyclate use of up to 70 per cent possible.
