Klöckner Pentaplast has received RecyClass certification for recyclability for its recycled PET at the Pravia site in Spain. The company was the first food packaging company to be awarded the certification.
Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) was the first company for food packaging to receive the RecyClass certification for traceability with a closed-loop module for its recycled PET (rPET) at its production site in Pravia, Spain.
„We are proud to have received the brand new closed-loop module as part of the RecyClass traceability certification for our site in Pravia. We are the very first company to achieve this. This achievement demonstrates total transparency regarding the origin of the rPET flakes from food trays that we use for our kp Tray2Tray initiative. We are fully focussed on reducing waste throughout the packaging value chain by developing clear, thermoformed PET trays from recycled PET trays, which are then also fully recyclable.“
Cecilia Guardado, Marketing Director - Trays, at kp
In addition, kp recently launched the first food packaging trays onto the market, which are made from 100 per cent rPET made exclusively from trays. Until now, trays for food packaging have been produced with increasing proportions of recycled PET material, but the 100 per cent rPET trays from kp are the first to be made entirely from recycled tray material and, above all, are completely transparent.
„The RecyClass traceability certification with the closed loop module is a great achievement for kp and its kp Tray2Tray initiative. When we launched this circular initiative in 2020, 3 per cent of our post-consumer recycled material came from kp Tray2Tray. By 2022, this proportion had risen to 9.1 per cent and by 2023 to 11.4 per cent - that equates to more than 900 million trays recycled and used. Our goal is to grow continuously thanks to collaboration with the entire value chain.“
