WeSort.AI is developing an innovative AI-based solution for the precise and fast sorting of waste. This technology is set to significantly change the waste management industry and has already been nominated for the German Start-up Award 2024.

Brothers Nathanael and Johannes Laier have launched their start-up WeSort.AI developed an AI-based technology to make waste management more efficient and sustainable. The idea arose from the desire to create a forward-looking solution to a socially relevant problem. According to the founders, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for automated waste sorting could make a significant contribution to the realisation of a circular economy.

WeSort.AI's technology sets itself apart from existing sorting systems by being able to recognise and precisely sort over seven million different products. Even heavily soiled or damaged items are reliably identified. The AI analyses the material, brand, volume and weight of the waste, enabling particularly accurate sorting. According to Johannes Laier, the technology is able to achieve a sorting accuracy that significantly surpasses human sorters. „The AI works five times faster than a human and achieves almost 100 per cent accuracy,“ explains Laier.

AI also recognises hazardous substances

WeSort.AI is primarily aimed at operators of waste sorting systems, including large waste management companies and municipal waste disposal companies. Customers include, among others Remondis, Veolia and ALBA. The technology is already being used in several areas, including the sorting of commercial waste, electronic waste and materials from the Yellow Bag. Of particular note is the AI's ability to recognise and selectively sort out hazardous materials such as batteries, which significantly reduces the risk of fire in sorting facilities.

The founders are particularly focussed on the further development of their technology in order to meet the growing demands of waste management in the future. The plan is to significantly increase the number of systems in use in the coming years and drive international expansion.

Nomination for the German Founder Award

WeSort.AI's innovative strength has already earned the young company a nomination for the 2024 German Founder Award in the „StartUp“ category. In addition to WeSort.AI, BLUU Seafood and Dermanostic are also on the shortlist for the award. All finalists benefit from personalised advice from Porsche Consulting and receive access to the German Start-up Award network.

According to experts, the future of WeSort.AI could play a decisive role in the transition to a fully functioning circular economy. With its combination of advanced technology and a clear focus on sustainability, the company aims to not only transform waste management, but also make a significant contribution to environmental protection.
