Tethered caps: consumer friendliness is crucial

According to Berry Global, a recent study shows that the acceptance of linked closures on plastic bottles depends largely on user-friendliness and functionality.

With the introduction of bonded closures under the EU's Single-Use Plastics Directive, plastic bottle caps must remain firmly attached to the container in future. Although this regulation does not apply in the UK, many manufacturers there also rely on standardised solutions to optimise their production processes.

Consumer feedback as a benchmark for success

An independent study by the market research company Watch Me Think has shown that not all connected fasteners are equally well received. Aspects such as intuitive usability, stability and convenience are decisive for consumers. According to Berry Global, their models are characterised by ease of use and an improved drinking experience.

„Consumer feedback has shown very clearly that connected closures should not compromise the drinking experience. All our models ensure that the cap can be opened at a wide angle and snaps into place so that it stays out of the face area. It is also easy to re-attach to the top of the bottle for re-capping,“ explains Vincent Clauzel, EVP Food, Beverage and Specialities at Berry Global.

Focus on sustainability and recycling

In addition to consumer friendliness, the environmental aspect also plays a central role. As one of the largest plastics recyclers in Europe, Berry Global emphasises that bonded closures can make an important contribution to the circular economy. As the closure is a significant part of the packaging weight, its firm connection to the bottle helps to increase recycling rates and reduce environmental pollution.

According to Berry Global, it sees the legal changeover to connected closures as an opportunity to develop innovative solutions. The company has invested in research and development and currently offers Four different closure families for different types of drinks, including still water, carbonated drinks and sports drinks. Further variants for additional product segments are to follow in the future.

„With our global reach and diversified design and manufacturing capabilities, we are ideally positioned to support our customers on a national and international level and ensure both product quality and supply chain resilience,“ says Vincent Clauzel.

Conclusion

The introduction of linked closures is permanently changing the packaging industry. While the legal requirement contributes to implementation, consumer friendliness remains the key to acceptance. Companies that focus on functional and intuitive designs could benefit from increased market acceptance in the long term.
