In this episode of packaging people we speak with Vivian Loftin, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Recyda. The start-up has developed software that helps companies keep track of the growing regulatory requirements for packaging.Â
Episode 26: Transparency in the packaging jungle
The packaging industry is facing a huge challenge: national regulations, complex sustainability requirements and an impending EU packaging regulation (PPWR) are causing uncertainty. Many companies are struggling with an almost unmanageable flood of regulatory requirements - and this is precisely where Recyda to.
The start-up from Freiburg has developed a digital platform that focuses on packaging and helps companies to analyse their recyclability, meet legal requirements and make more sustainable decisions. „Our platform not only makes it possible to assess packaging in terms of recyclability, but also to analyse factors such as material usage, recyclate content and legal requirements at a glance,“ explains Vivian Loftin, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Recyda
Focus on sustainable materials
„Sustainable packaging is not automatically recyclable - and vice versa. Only by taking a holistic view of all factors is it possible to make a truly informed decision.“

Digital solutions for a sustainable packaging industry
A key driver for the industry is the upcoming EU packaging regulation PPWR, which sets stricter requirements for packaging design and recyclability. Recyda has prepared for the new regulations and already offers companies a forecasting function that allows them to assess how their packaging portfolio will perform in 2030. „We help companies to prepare for the new requirements at an early stage. Because if you don't start analysing your packaging today, you run the risk of no longer being able to operate in compliance with the law in a few years“ time, warns Loftin.
However, it is not only legal requirements that make digitalisation necessary - the increasing data requirements for packaging are also forcing companies to rethink. Loftin sees this as a great opportunity for the industry: „Many companies are still working with Excel lists to manage their packaging data. But without digital solutions, this will no longer work in the future - the complexity is simply too high.“ Her appeal to companies: The courage to change. Those who deal with digitalisation at an early stage can not only overcome regulatory hurdles more easily, but also operate more efficiently and sustainably.
It will no longer work in the future without digitalisation - the complexity is simply too high. Companies must have the courage to modernise their processes now.
