Mondi, together with paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams, has launched a refill bag for concentrated paint on the UK market. Thanks to the expertise of the Mondi plant in Halle/Steinfeld, the mono-material bag has been equipped with a wider spout for easier filling and pouring.

The paint concentrate was developed as a replacement for the conventional 5-litre ready-to-use paint in rigid plastic containers. Consumers are encouraged to reuse these containers to mix the colour concentrate and recycle the packaging of the refill pack. The colour concentrate is in a lightweight 950 ml pouring bag with clearly printed mixing instructions supplied on the side. The spout provides excellent pourability to facilitate mixing with water and to obtain the desired amount of colour. The bag can be tightly closed after use to store unused concentrate.

Mondi worked closely with Sherwin-Williams to find a solution that met their specific packaging requirements. The re/cycle SpoutedPouch is a prefabricated pouch made of polyethylene monomaterial with a larger spout that makes it easier for Sherwin-Williams to fill the colour concentrate. Mondi's SpoutedPouch Reduces packaging waste and offers easy handling for exterior painting work, minimising the space required for transporting and storing the paint.

Compressed size compared to conventional 5-litre containers of premixed paint, 230 per cent more units fit on each pallet, which leads to greater efficiency in the supply chain. The bags also take up less space on the shelf and are packaged in shelf-ready tear-off packs of five. This makes reordering easier than with conventional containers. „By selling concentrate in pouring bags instead of premixed wood stain in rigid buckets, we have been able to reduce plastic consumption by up to 90 per cent,“ explains Christina Rowe, Head of Product Marketing at Sherwin-Williams.

„Our new solution has great potential for industrial applications. We utilise our integrated value chain for pouch production - from film extrusion and lamination to the application of the spout. We paid attention to high print quality so that the branding stands out on the shelf and the mixing instructions are clear and easy to read.“
