Absolut Vodka is taking a further step towards fully bio-based packaging: following successful tests, the company is launching the first paper-based closure for spirits bottles on the market together with the start-up Blue Ocean Closures - supplemented by the paper bottle that has already been tested.
Absolut Vodka says it is setting new standards in sustainable packaging solutions with the launch of an innovative paper-based bottle cap made from over 95% FSC-certified fibres. The innovation is part of the long-term goal of developing a completely bio-based bottle.
The new closure was developed in collaboration with with the Swedish start-up Blue Ocean Closures (BOC) and was tested in practice by bartenders for the first time at the „Absolut The Map“ event in May 2025. The focus was on functionality, handling and suitability for everyday use.
First generation with hybrid solution - fully bio-based in the long term
The closure currently combines a fibre body with a thin plastic barrier for sealing. The long-term vision is to replace this with a bio-based material as well. The paper-based solution already enables a CO₂ reduction compared to conventional closures made of aluminium or plastic - and can be disposed of via paper recycling in suitable markets.
Sustainability as part of the brand culture
The new closure solution is part of the parent company Pernod Ricard's „Future of Packaging“ initiative. It is intended to inspire both consumers and other brands to make more conscious packaging decisions.
Louise Werner, Director Future Packaging at Absolut: „The paper-based closure complements the paper bottle we have already developed and brings us a decisive step closer to our goal of completely bio-based packaging.“
