The packaging and circular economy industry makes an important contribution to the German economy, according to a study that provides a comprehensive overview of the ecological and economic aspects of packaging.
The Study "Benefits of packaging" was analysed in June 2018 by the Gesellschaft für Verpackungsmarktforschung (GVM) and the Institut think tank on behalf of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Verpackung und Umwelt e. V. (AGVU) was concluded.
With around 337,000 employees, the packaging and recycling industry provides work for just under 0.8 per cent of all people in employment in Germany. With 53 per cent of employees, the production of packaging materials and supplies is the most important sector. A Industry turnover of around 78.5 billion euros per year represents around 1.2 per cent of the total turnover generated in the German manufacturing industry.
With a turnover of 55.5 billion euros, packaging manufacturers form an important core of the industry, which continues to grow - by around 1.9 per cent annually. At 26.6 billion euros, more than a third of the turnover of the circular economy and packaging industry was generated abroad through the export of machinery and packaging materials and supplies. This corresponds to annual growth of 3.9 per cent between 2010 and 2016.
