Ahlstrom has introduced GreenPod Home, a new portfolio of home-compostable coffee pods. The product range, which has been awarded the OK compost HOME certificate by TÜV Austria, can be biodegraded under domestic conditions without leaving behind toxic residues or microplastics.
The new material enables brands and processors to develop coffee pods that consumers can compost in their own gardens. According to Ahlstrom, GreenPod Home is compatible with common processing lines while ensuring optimal brewing performance.
„Although Ahlstrom was already able to offer industrially compostable solutions, this patented home compostable variant is an important step forward,“ said Patrice Blanc, Head of R&D at Ahlstrom. It underlines the company's expertise in biodegradable fibre solutions for coffee applications.
According to Philippe Sevoz, Vice President Beverage and Casing, the development is in line with the company's sustainability priorities and stricter requirements in the food packaging industry. Ahlstrom wants to establish itself as a reference provider for sustainable, heat-sealable and non-heat-sealable home compostable solutions for tea and coffee.
The company sees GreenPod Home as a further step towards strengthening its range of fibre-based speciality materials for the beverage sector.
