ALDI North and ALDI SOUTH are phasing out conventional plastic bags, known as knot bags, for fruit and vegetables. From summer 2019, all shops of the two discounters will be Knot bags made from renewable raw materials for one cent available. From autumn 2019, the corporate groups will also be offering Reusable reusable nets to.
Together with other retailers, ALDI North and ALDI SOUTH decided around three years ago to only offer single-use plastic bags for a fee. Since the retailers' voluntary commitment, the consumption of plastic carrier bags has been by two thirds decreased. In 2018, Germans took home no more than 24 plastic bags per capita on average.
„The figures confirm that the pricing of plastic bags has clearly made consumers rethink their behaviour. We are pursuing a similar principle with the symbolic cent for our disposable bags in the fruit and vegetable sector,“ says Kristina Bell, Group Buying Director Quality Assurance & Corporate Responsibility. „We would be delighted if other retailers followed suit. Because only with an industry-wide solution can we take a big step forward in reducing plastic bags.“
Reusable nets for transport
ALDI customers are given the opportunity to make a conscious decision in favour of the reusable alternative and thus reduce their plastic consumption. Last year, consumers in Germany used around three billion disposable bags consumed.

The washable net is particularly hard-wearing and offers enough space for transporting many fruit and vegetable items. Customers can also Reusable nets from other suppliers for their shopping. The reusable nets will be available in all ALDI North and ALDI SOUTH shops from autumn 2019.
