The ALPLA Group, an international specialist in packaging solutions and recycling, is continuing to expand its recycling activities worldwide. The Austrian family-owned company is now building a plant for HDPE recycling in Mexico. It will produce 15,000 tonnes of recycled pellets per year.
In Toluca (capital of the Central American state of México), the ALPLA acquired a plot of land and from autumn 2020 will be building a State-of-the-art recycling plant for HDPE. Commissioning is scheduled for the second half of 2021. The Investment sum is around 15 million euros65 jobs will be created.
The company will be managed as a 100 per cent subsidiary of ALPLA. The plant has an annual capacity of 15,000 tonnes of HDPE regranulate for applications in the non-food sector, for example packaging solutions for personal care or household cleaners. The target markets are primarily Mexico and neighbouring countries in Central America and the USA.
HDPE recycling plant enables circular economy
By investing in the HDPE recycling plant, ALPLA is realising its global goals within the framework of the New Plastics Economy (an initiative of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation) on the one hand, while remaining true to its regional strategy on the other.
"ALPLA has been demonstrating foresight in the area of recycling for many years. We invest in regions where the demand for recycled materials is not yet so high. In this way, we give used plastics a value and act as a role model for the realisation of the circular economy." Georg Lässer, Head of Recycling
Carlos TorresRegional Manager Mexico, adds: "So we generate demand on the collection side and promote the development of the necessary infrastructure. We can also offer our regional customers the required circularity of recyclable materials."
Many years of experience in the region
In Mexico, ALPLA has many years of experience in recycling post-consumer PET. As early as 2005 Industria Mexicana de Reciclaje (IMER) the first bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Latin America at the start. IMER is a Joint venture between ALPLA México, Coca-Cola México and Coca-Cola Femsa.
Over the past 15 years, the partners have joined forces to Infrastructure for the collection and recycling of used PET beverage bottles established. The plant now produces almost 15,000 tonnes of food-grade regranulate from post-consumer PET every year. ALPLA now wants to utilise this network and its many years of experience to develop HDPE recycling in the region.
Back in November 2019, ALPLA announced the purchase of two recycling plants in Spain, thereby taking the first step in the area of HDPE recycling.
