
With Amazon Fresh, the shipping giant offers a grocery delivery service in the USA and has also been doing so in Germany for several years. To this end, the company has now developed a paper-based packaging solution that is easier for consumers to recycle, at least in the USA.
Five factors that were taken into account in the development are named by programme manager in the food delivery packaging sector, Joe Rake, in an article on the company blog. The focus was on direct functionality, i.e. product safety and the cooling capacity of the new packaging. In addition, however, the Space consumption in the delivery vehicle. The team wanted to move away from the classic crate in favour of a flexible solution. It was also important that the new packaging complies with US standards. Overseas only for the time being
Rake and his team started development with this catalogue. The biggest challenge was, a paper-based alternative to classic insulating materials, plastic barriers and bubble wrap. Ultimately, however, the multi-year development phase with subsequent tests proved successful and is now - just in time for Thanksgiving - in widespread use.
According to the company, the new packaging saves Amazon around 365 tonnes of plastic film, 1575 tonnes of cotton fibre and 7500 tonnes of non-recyclable mixed plastics. In addition, the new packaging is produced locally in the USA, so that an additional CO2-savings due to shorter delivery routes.
Whether and when the new packaging will find its way into German households and thus into the recycling cycle is still up in the air. So far, Amazon Fresh only delivers in Berlin, Potsdam, Hamburg and Munich. It is also unclear, whether the packaging could also be recycled in paper waste according to EU and federal standards.
