Artificial intelligence is not only increasingly being used in packaging machines. It is also being used more and more in packaging design. We talked about this in our FACHPACK.TV programme with packaging expert Uwe Melichar.
There's no doubt about it: AI optimises processes and could also shape the future of packaging design. In an interview with Uwe Melichar, Vice-President of the European Brand and Packaging Design Association, we discussed the opportunities and challenges that AI brings to packaging development.
The role of AI in packaging development
The packaging industry is facing a transformation that will be accelerated by the use of AI. Melichar emphasises that there are already companies that are successfully using AI in their design and development processes. For example, AI is being used to generate serving suggestions for products, which gives designers more room for manoeuvre and increases efficiency.
„Everything is in motion at the moment. There are people who are afraid of what might come. There are many who are already using it,“ explains Melichar. It turns out that AI not only increases the speed with which designs are created, but also improves the quality of the results if it is used correctly.
Examples of the use of AI
A concrete example of the effective use of AI is a project by Win Creative, which developed an entire series of packaging for a customer in which the images were generated using AI. „It's fantastic to see the quality of the results,“ says Melichar.
However, he points out that the quality of the results depends heavily on the data that is entered into the system. „If you put artificial intelligence on crap, you'll get new crap, but faster,“ he warns. It is crucial to provide the right information in order to achieve high-quality results.
Optimisation of workflows and automation
Another important aspect is the optimisation of work processes. AI can help to increase efficiency in packaging development by automating repetitive tasks and reducing sources of error. „Things need to talk to each other more,“ says Melichar. This applies to both the machines and the design processes.
„There is still a lot to come in the area of these workflows,“ says Melichar, emphasising that many companies are not yet fully exploiting the possibilities of automation. The integration of AI into existing systems could significantly increase efficiency and help companies become more competitive.
The future of the packaging industry with AI
Melichar sees great opportunities for the packaging industry to develop further through the use of AI. „AI will not replace people, but people who use AI will replace people who don't use AI,“ he says. This perspective emphasises the need for professionals in the packaging industry to get to grips with the new technologies and continue their training.
„We are still at the beginning, and many mistakes happen. But if we deal with the issue in good time, we will continue to be in demand,“ Melichar concludes.
Overall, the interview shows that AI is already playing a significant role in packaging development today and will become even more important in the future. Companies that start working with these technologies at an early stage can gain a competitive advantage and significantly improve the efficiency and sustainability of their packaging processes.
