The ASI standard guarantees high sustainability standards in the aluminium value chain - from mining, refining, smelting, production and product use through to end-of-life management and recycling. Ball has now received certification for its aluminium packaging for aerosols, household and personal care products.
Ball Corporation, the supplier of sustainable aluminium packaging, has achieved certification of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) for the performance and chain-of-custody standards for its Global Aerosol Packaging division. The Aerosol division of Ball offers a Wide range of aluminium packaging solutions in the personal care, household and beverage packaging categories. These include a range of extruded disposable and reusable aluminium bottles as well as innovative aerosol containers with primary aluminium, which are produced using low-carbon energy sources.
ASI aims to promote sustainability throughout the aluminium value chain and certifies a company's commitment to social, ecological and ethical standards. The Performance Standard is a measure of the extent to which a company endeavours to assess, manage and disclose its environmental, social and governance impacts.
The Chain of Custody standard sets out requirements for the creation of a transparent and traceable supply chain that covers all areas from mining and remelting to casting, rolling, can production and filling. The ASI audit covered all nine of Ball's aerosol packaging and slug production facilities worldwide: Velim in the Czech Republic, Bellegarde and Copal in France, Devizes in the United Kingdom, Ahmedabad in India, Verona in the USA, Sherbrooke in Canada, Itupeva in Brazil and San Luis Potosi in Mexico, as well as the regional headquarters in Westminster, Colorado, and Lille, France.
With ASI certification, companies can prove that they comply with increasingly stringent sustainability protocols. This also includes the forthcoming directive on corporate due diligence in the area of sustainability, which is expected to be introduced by the European Union in the first half of 2023.
„Achieving ASI certification demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and is the result of a rigorous process. Infinitely recyclable aluminium packaging is a prime example of the circular economy, keeping resources in the system and reducing the impact on the environment. The sustainability efforts of our aluminium aerosol business show what can be achieved by setting targets to reduce materials and emissions, through innovation and, above all, by partnering with our customers.“
