Anyline, a provider of AI-supported mobile data capture and data insights, has developed a standalone barcode scanning solution for drones in collaboration with Mondi, which can be used to scan entire warehouses and distribution centres autonomously.

Looking for a way to improve inventory management processes across multiple large warehouse locations, Mondi trialled various technologies, including RFID handheld devices and camera scanners. The breakthrough came when the company finally commissioned Anyline to implement its Mobile data acquisition technology in DJI Mini 3 Pro drones to be used.

„Taking stock of a warehouse using autonomous drones was a major challenge. After several months of testing, problem-solving and integration into our backend systems, we were able to carry out a successful inventory in our first warehouse and prove that the technology works smoothly. What initially sounded like a science fiction fantasy is now a reality.“

Before the use of barcode scanning drones, employees had to rely on forklift trucks and manual scanning to to record the stock in large halls. On the one hand, this process required working at great heights and, on the other, it was not uncommon to have to work overtime outside of warehouse operating hours, because only then was there sufficient space and the additional safety measures could be complied with. As a result, stocktaking could often only be carried out once a year. Today a single employee can use the drone to scan the entire stock in a warehouse regularly, aisle by aisle and even during operating hours. The new procedure is not only safer, but also much more accurate and makes the obligatory counting of the entire warehouse easier.
