Mondi has developed a fully recyclable plastic composite film for pre-made bags and FFS rollstock that is suitable for integration into existing recycling schemes.

BarrierPack Recyclable is an innovative new composite film for pre-made bags. The sustainable material has the same positive performance characteristics as conventional materials and is suitable for the circular economy.

„Our new composite material, BarrierPack Recyclable, is a major step forward in the field of sustainable packaging,“ says Carl Stonley, technical customer advisor at Mondi Consumer Goods Packaging. „Not only is it fully recyclable, but it also offers exceptional mechanical properties and is ideal for Various packaging formats. BarrierPack Recyclable consists of two layers of PE film, making it a highly functional, flexible packaging material that is easy to open and reseal - to the delight of end consumers. The material is stiffer, more stable and lighter than conventional PET/PE composite films of the same thickness. It can therefore be moulded directly on FFS machines or used for prefabricated packaging.“

BarrierPack Recyclable has a high moisture barrier and can therefore be used for a wide range of applications: from dry foods and food ingredients to cosmetics and pet care products.

BarrierPack Recyclable as a sustainable alternative

Plastic packaging plays a crucial role in protecting products, reducing food waste and increasing user-friendliness. At the same time, it raises the question of what sustainable consumption can look like. As a fully recyclable material, BarrierPack Recyclable meets the market demand for Sustainable alternatives to flexible laminates. According to the company, this was confirmed by extensive tests carried out by CeDo Recycling, a leading company for recycling technologies from the Netherlands.

Ton Emans, Managing Director at CeDo Recycling and President of the Association Plastics Recyclers Europe, explains: „In January 2018, the European Commission presented a strategy to ensure that all plastic packaging is recyclable by 2030. This innovation shows that flexible plastic packaging can become a truly circular product. Flexible, recyclable material is crucial for multiple use and thus the protection of valuable resources in Europe.“
